What is the one word you associate with KLM? Royal. KLM Royal Dutch airlines has reached a new agreement with its pilot union VNV. This new deal will enable KLM to operate over 10,000 new flights, ensuring millions more passengers reach their destinations. This involves pilots working one extra day in peak traffic time of summer of 2026, for which they will be aptly compensated. There is a global pilot shortage going on right now, and this deal aims to address that by modifying pilot scheduling and training procedures. KLM commits to better conditions, improved compensation and readiness for Airbus A350 integration.

What's the best growth mantra for a company? When its employees invest in its growth. In the case of the Dutch airline, its pilots are investing in its growth. Ruud Stegers, Chairman VNV stated, "We recognize the urgency to take action now. With this agreement, pilots are making a structural contribution to a healthy KLM, and KLM is showing that it values the role and commitment of its pilots". (source: KLM)

Pilots will receive appropriate compensation in return for their significant investment. For example, the current scheme that allows pilots to travel at a discount once a year will be made permanent. The airline and union have also agreed on modifying rest areas inside the Airbus A350 to fit extended tailored beds for tall crew members.

KLM's HR Director, Miriam Kartman mentioned, "This agreement is an important step for KLM. Thanks to these agreements, we can fly more, which is one of the key priorities of the Back-on-Track program to regain financial health. We all benefit from this. Moreover, this demonstrates that we work together at the negotiating table to find solutions that are good for our colleagues and good for KLM. We want to achieve this for all our other colleagues as quickly as possible." (source: KLM)

These steps are expected to boost revenues in the coming years, and achieving progress towards sustainable future and solid operational results.

KLM is one of the most popular airlines in the world and with these steps to improve employee-employer relationship, they are certainly justifying that. Seeing pilots receive what they deserve is great and seeing the Dutch carrier making steps towards a sustainable future is awesome.
