Flight 357’s Smoky Surprise: Passenger's device catches fire mid flight
American Airlines Flight 357 turned from a Philly–Phoenix hop into a smoky surprise when a passenger’s mystery device caught fire mid-air, forcing a diversion to Dulles.

The flight was supposed to be just from Philadelphia to Phoenix, or so we thought.
On August 23, 2025, the American Airlines Flight 357 was just another plane on a straightforward A-321 journey from Philly to Phoenix . But little they know, the flight had other plans, namely an unscheduled detour to Washington’s Dulles International Airport. What sparked the diversion? A passenger’s mystery gadget decided to go full smoke alarm mid-flight. Maybe he somehow missed the memo of no explosive on board. Even then how he was able to get it past TSA is another mystery that turned the cabin into a surprise fire drill.
According to People, the aircraft touched down safely at Dulles around 11:50 a.m., with all 160 passengers and six crew members stepping off as unscathed as they boarded (minus a few frazzled nerves and a tinge of inconvenience) .
The culprit remains classified, think of a less smartphone-on-fire and more X-Files, because no one’s actually saying what this thing actually was. We have no idea why such an air of enigma surrounds it but what we do know is that the crew acted fast and contained the smoky saboteur before landing.
“I started smelling smoke,” said 22-year-old passenger Adriana Novello, who was jolted awake when a flight attendant quite literally jumped on her exit-row seat for the fire extinguisher. “People were coughing… something was on fire in the aisle,” she recalled.
However it was nothing to worry as the fire diversion didn’t jam up operations at Dulles. The emergency crews greeted the plane as per the drill and no injuries were reported. Lucky people. Passengers were rerouted on other flights, and all systems were cleared for takeoff again shortly after.
The FAA is now on the case, investigating, as they should, about the cause of this rogue device to light up mid-air. Hopefully, this teaches people what not to pack on their next flight. Seriously, explosives ? On a plane? It's easily the top 10 things you should not carry in your flight.
